How much does it actually hold?

It is a high-waist brief, not a control garment. The supplier lists tummy smoothing and seat shaping among its stated functions, and the waistband is cut high to sit above the natural waist — so it smooths the line rather than compressing it. Soft support, honest about what it is.

Is the gusset cotton?

Yes — 100% cotton, stated as a material attribute by the supplier. The body is a polyamide knit in the 70–80% range, so the cotton is where it matters and the stretch is where it needs to move.

How does this compare to a control brief?
